If you have Star Wars fans in your house then you probably have Lightsabers. Or, many of your household items become Lightsabers at some point in time. But what is a Lightsaber? We’ve got all the details to help you look like an expert.
Lightsaber (n): The signature weapon for the Order of the Jedi, as well as their evil counterparts, the Sith. Lightsabers are comprised of a metal hilt, which contains a kyber crystal harvested from the icebound caves of the planet Ilum. Young Jedi must harvest the crystals themselves, using the Force to guide them, and then construct their Lightsaber. Once they are attuned to their crystal, it will project their Force into a blade, and at that time it will glow in a specific color which does not change for that Jedi.
Lightsabers are mainly used for close combat battles, as well as to deflect blaster bolts. They are also routinely used in Jedi knighting ceremonies. Lightsabers are known to be extremely difficult to control, which is why only a trained Jedi should possess one. It can cut through almost anything without any resistance, but as the Star Wars Universe has expanded, some Lightsaber-proof materials have been introduced.
Lightsaber colors are primarily Blue, Green, and Red. Blue and Green representing the good-natured Jedi, and Red being reserved for the dark order of the Sith. However, in Episodes I-III, Jedi Master Mace Windu wields a purple Lightsaber. In the Clone Wars series many yellow Lightsabers are seen, in addition to the traditional colors.
