One of the things my kids love to do during the summer is to go bowling. I sign them up for free games at Kids Bowl Free and all we have to pay for is the shoes! At our local participating bowling alley the shoe rentals are $4 per person, so $8 for my two oldest each time we visit. After ten trips that means I’ve spent $80 on shoe rentals!
I knew I could buy two pairs of kids bowling shoes for cheaper than $80, and I found these kids rental-style bowling shoes on Amazon. They were the cheapest option, but the only down side was that they said “RENTAL” nice and big on the side. I was nervous that someone at the bowling alley might approach me, so the first time we used them I brought my receipt with me! I didn’t want to worry about that all summer so I decided we’d have to cover it up somehow.
First I thought maybe I could spray paint them, but I’m not very good at it, so I scrapped that idea really quick. Then I thought a little Duct Tape would fix them – it fixes everything! Right? I let the boys pick out a print they liked. Something on the smaller side works best. I grabbed a small sharp knife and got to work.
I like this print a lot, and it was easy to match up when I needed to fill in extra spaces. We almost went with a Batman print, but I think the mustaches are more timeless and whimsical. Getting it on the shoes was pretty simple. I just placed a large piece of Duct Tape over the area I wanted to cover, carefully cut around the edges with my knife and then made sure it was smooth. I did both sides, the front and a little circle on the back where it said the shoe size.
The end result were some super stylish kids bowling shoes. We got tons of compliments from fellow bowlers and even bowling alley employees the first time we took them out for a spin. The boys absolutely love them which only makes our summer bowling trips more exciting.
